Ruby Tuesday - Flat Out

For Ruby Tuesday this time, I am true to my Airhead moniker by looking at any aviation scans I may have. And I found this one. The time is 1983, the place is on a runway at the Minneapolis-St Paul airport, the subject is a Boeing 737-200 with the stylish 1980s United Airlines scheme with the ruby here being the red paint surrounding the windows.

The story is more interesting if you follow the ruby-red arrows pointing at the issue at hand. Upon landing and roll out, the plan
e experienced a bunch of flat tires. No danger, but an inconvenience for sure. The runway was closed, a couple of buses were dispatched for the ride to the terminal. However, this is as close to a plane on a runway that I had been near, and I was able to get this beauty on film on the K1000. An interesting trip. Check out Mary's site for reds galore!

Great shot! What is thought provoking is that it had more than one flat tire.

That must have been quite a landing! The story definitely makes the photo.

honnestly if it has to happen I prefer a flat tire at a car and not at an airplane, !

Interesting story with that photo. At first the two red lines distracted my attention from the red around the plane's windows, took me a couple of secs to even see that red in the photo.
Happy Ruby Tuesday! :)

What a scoop ! The story overcomes the Ruby subject. I imagine United A. wouldn't appreciate this picture of this mechanical failure ! I won't show it to my husband, he's like you , he 's very interested by the beginning of airplanes history, but he's scared of traveling by plane ! A real dilemma.
Interesting Ruby Tuesday.

Curious that so many tires on the main gear -- and on both sides no less -- went out at the same time. I'd have to suspect that there was debris on the runway that caused this and not a failure of that many tires all at once. In a way, it's good that both sides were affected though... handling that bus with only one half of the main gear blown out could have been ... interesting.

Wow - that would take a bit more than a can of two of Fix-A-Flat to get those babies pumped back up!

Great shot, Ralph!

Hi Ralph. I didn't know what United looks like now-a-days. They must not fly very much into Houston.
Happy RT!

Oh yes, after a long absence I did an RT myself this week. [on JIM'S LITTLE BLOG.]

I bet the passengers wouldn't clap on a not so nice landing bump!
