Ruby Tuesday - Remembering 1968

Ruby Tuesday often compels me to reminisce, to work at capturing the past. Alas, many of the color prints in my possession are fading, the Kodacolor disintegrating. The scans offer no improvement nor restoration possibilities. At least I captured the moment in digital.

We are in 1968 or 1969, judging by the style of the youngest in the family, Christopher, age 4. The late 1960s style is prevalent in his jacket. Starting about now, plaid was to ruin the view until maybe 1981. But it was the look of the day, and it is in red. Combined with the 1964 red VW taillights, retro rubies are in vogue...

Faded this print is, but Grandpa liked visiting us in Connecticut, and to visit the 'typical' New England things, like the old Cider Mill in Glastonbury. In those days, unpasteurized and very cloudy cider was what we consumed, and since it wasn't sold year round, we bought it primarily in the Fall. Today pasteurized and nearly clear cider can be purchased in any supermarket, at any time.

Anyway, he liked to visit this place when town. The reds are faded, but the sign was like the building, painted barn red. His shirt might have been red, too. All retro rubies...

This type of jacket was popular in Europe too. My youngest uncle (aged 60 now) had one of those.
I love the framing and scene in the second photo.

I love the old photos. My children still wince when they look at pictures of themselves when they were little. I try to tell them their clothes were in style then, but they refuse to believe me.

What a great smile. I love his jacket. Does it come in my size? "Retro Rubies" is a great term for many of your RT posts.

I remember those old VWs! Not the jacket so much, though. And you were obviously at a cider mill, but those look suspiciously like pumpkins! Great entry!

Almost everyone I know has a photo with a VW Bug in it and a story to tell that goes with the car. Memories are made of this.

Happy RT.

Great memoires. Your photo reminds me of my brother when he was that age.

Grandpa's picture would work well for sepia scenes too. Very timely photo. It feels very Rockwell-esque.

Some of the earliest photos of me are in the most horrific red and green plaid pants imaginable. Truly painful.

I love the photo of the family visit to the pumpkin farm, what a great link between past and present. I remember that cider, too. My grandfather used to get big jugs of it for Thanksgiving each year, it was the best part of the meal.

Great memories to hold on to. I remember those jackets also.

My Dad had a VW bug almost exactly like that one back in 1968 also! These kinds of memories are just great and certainly do take us back to a time when life was a lot simpler - at least in my memories it was!

I've enjoy looking at the old photos you've shared and seeing yours makes me want to dig out MY old photos too. Thanks for visiting MY Ruby Rose at Small Reflections. Here in Southern California we're blessed with blossoms year round and I'm delighted to share. Of course we miss out on the changing seasons and the beautiful Fall colors so I love to see the amazing views others capture.
Hugs and blessings,

Oh boy! Both these photos are so precious. They take me back and I so can remember these times. There was a bug like that parked in our driveway, too.

Your old rare ruby treasures are real jewels.
The VW was called the Bubble in Norway and every second citizen had one.
Both the young boy and your granddad are looking so nice. I wonder; were people nicer back then, or has my inner film mellowed as well?

dear ralph...i have been thinking of this vw and the cute little boy since i saw your ruby tuesday yesterday...what a little cutie!
you know when the goldens were just small kids and they were riding in dad golden's car, whenever we saw a vw, we would hit each other three times, and say, "one tow three volkswagen"!
and if it was a vw van, then it was ten times.
of course you had to be first to punch is you wanted to be a winner, so many fights broke out, i am telling you and it used to bug dad golden to no end.
then the big day came that we passed a vw car lot, and man ralph, there sure was a lot of punching going on and surprisingly there were no fights because that day we were ALL a winner!
this cute picture here brought back to me precious memories.
and that picture of your grandpa is just perfect.
i like the history seen in these old "faded" photos!...

thanks for your visit to my ruby tuesday post.
