Ruby Tuesday - Sixties Rubies

Ruby Tuesday this week takes us back to yesteryear, the time frame being 1968, the place our home in East Hartford. To the left, is Grandpa on Easter Sunday that year. Hats for men were speedily becoming passé by now, yet his dress hat was smartly blocked and looked good on him. The rubies are in the background and include our neighbor's house along with our new 1968 VW microbus. A terribly unsafe vehicle, but our family ride. It sported a massive 57 (really) horsepower. A dog with room to spare, today we really appreciate 6-8 airbags, ABS, traction control, enough horsepower, etc. in our family haulers. However, it is ruby in appearance...

To the right is the early autumn of the same year, and all seven of us are in school clothing. Myself, Claudia and Sharon have our St. Christopher school dress code colors, myself in a maroon blazer and tie (indicating eighth grade) and the girls in the maroon-gray plaid skirts with ruby ties. The others if in public school are in 'civilian' dress. I think that Grandpa probably took this...

The past is fading, or at least the prints are. See many ruby artists (or historians) at Mary's great meme!

You all look like characters out of a movie, a classy movie.

Ralph,
You are looking so swell as an 8 grader.Imagine you being the eldest of seven siblings. That caring big brother attitude still lingers on.
I'm just a little bit envious.
You and your eldest sister are looking very much alike.
Your granddad sure looked huggable, even though I don't think he was the kind of man one would try to mess around with.

My Dad also wore a hat after most men had stopped to do so.
He just felt like doing so.
Stetson was his favorite brand.

I never drove the old VW buses, but rode quite some miles as a passenger.
From 1969 till around 1983 these were the means of transport of the various institutions I used to work on.
I remember I was yelled at, when I asked for passenger safety belts for the handicapped children.
Those were days.

Good morning Ralph. I always did like a man in a hat. Just seemed to make the whole "man ensem" complete. Last year Q surprised us and bought a hat. I'm still getting used to it.

I miss hats on men, I know they wear "hats" but I don't mean baseball caps.
Love the VW van and the bug, but the stars are the ones in the background of your group picture.

So many memories come tumbling back just looking at these photos.
You were a stellar group.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post! This brought back so many memories from microbus to school uniforms and especially Grandpa's hat. You could have your hat cleaned at Arnold's right inside the shoe shop next door to my uncle's photo shop in my hometown. So many rubies here!

I like the hats. There must be something about artists and '68 Microbuses, a red one, at that.

Since the photos are fading, you are smart to convert them to digital.

Love the photo of your grandfather. I think we have some similar pictures filed away. And a great choice for Ruby Tuesday.

Here's mine.

Hats are still common for men, they just don't look as dapper as your grandpa's!

Ralph, these shots are so cool. It's really great to have photos from the different decades. I graduated high school in 1968 so these fashions look familiar to me. happy Tuesday!

Nice shots. Took me down my own memory lane. My father wore hats and as a kid I used to love putting his hats on my own head and wearing them around. Hadn't thought about that in a long, long time. Thanks for the memories.

Seven kids. You were never lonely as a child, I'm sure.

I love the faded look of those old photos when ruby was much duller than it is now.
