Shadow Shot Sunday - Seasonaly adjusted

It is now Autumn up north of the Equator, and for Shadow Shot Sunday 2, I am looking for seasonal shot subjects from any era. And I have two that should work. It is the Autumn of 1968, and my grandfather (left, aka: The Sage of Steubenville) and grandmother were visiting the family as we trekked to the old Cider Mill in Glastonbury CT. As I remember it, the press was in an old barn and it bottled the cloudy and unpasteurized* cider. With a southerly sun, shadows fall upon the visitors and harvested fruit alike. SSS2 just adds to the seasonal charm...

* - I may sound like an old-timer when I say all seven of us children drank unpasteurized apple cider with no ill effects. Although when becoming a parent a couple of decades later, we changed our tune somewhat. So from milk, to cider to beer, pasteurized just seems safer - maybe I am an old-timer :)

Shadow Shot Sunday - Sixties sandy shoreline in shadow...

Boardwalk Bike Ride, Atlantic City, 1969
Alas, due to a busy schedule this past week, blogging has been missed. Among the tasks that has is been occupying my time is a family photo archive project with my Aunt Terry, scanning many decades of history - which seems just right for a blogging return to Shadow Shot Sunday 2.

Today's subjects are from summer vacations in the 1960s in the New Jersey shore towns of Atlantic City, way before the glitz of today's casinos that line the Boardwalk, and Brigantine. Shadows subtly fall around the subjects and scenes upon these barrier island sandbars under the sun...Today's subjects are from summer vacations in the 1960s in the New Jersey shore towns of Atlantic City, way before the glitz of today's casinos that line the Boardwalk, and Brigantine. Shadow Shot Sunday - Easter past

For Shadow Shadow Sunday 2, I revert to Easter past and early Spring shadows, spanning the 20 years from 1948 to 1968. The earlier pics showcase my dad and his sister, Aunt Terry on Easter Sunday 1948 in front of their homestead at 1645 Oregon Avenue in Steubenville Ohio. They are dressed in their finery including hats and suits.

The newer photo is their dad and my namesake, Grandpa (aka: Ralph, the Sage of Steubenville) in front of our East Hartford home in 1968. All were dressed nicely in honor of the beauty of the day and the new life that Easter represents...

Whimsical Windows - Happy Birthday big sis...

1956, Brigantine NJ
1968, East Hartford CT
1983
I often return to the past for Toby's fun meme, Whimsical Windows/Delirious Doors. Today I must though, for the firstborn and big sister Michele had a surprise 60th birthday party for her yesterday. Planned for and executed by her two fabulous kids with lots of food, fun and music.

We celebrate here as she is seen with in doors and windows over the years. She is amazing, and birthdays are to be celebrated! Although the celebration was yesterday as she is on a business trip today to the frozen tundra (-6°F /-21°C) of Minnesota...Happy birthday!

Shadow Shot Sunday - East Hartford Easter Edits

Shadow Shot Sunday 2 is back on a snowy day, today's 7 inches (18 cm) ironically is exactly one month since the Blizzard. Beyond complaining about the weather, I am trying to fix damaged film prints from the past. Easter in the past is what is presented here. The prints are from 1968, my Grandfather dressed up for the Holiday, included the well blocked hat. To the right is my sister and a neighbor both dressed in their retro back then Easter finest. Grandpa was the photographer and brought two German SLR cameras (an Exa and an Exacta, built in Dresden) and so took B&W and color shots at every visit...the prints may be in bad shape - but never the memories!

Tina's Pic Story - 'K' is for kids

Tina nicely hosts the fun foto meme, Pic Story where we add pictures to match the weekly theme she kindly provides. This week is the letter 'K', and for me the obvious selection is for kids. Hard to believe, but I was the second of seven children of our family in East Hartford Connecticut - here in 1968 with all in school dress, some in uniforms (like me in the maroon blazer). Plenty of kids here (clockwise from left, me. Michele, Claudia, Sharon, Chris, Vicki, Sue)

Our brood these days is smaller though, with son Cameron and daughter Allegra - here on the first day of school about 28 August 1996. He was in first grade, she in third grade. Time fies as she graduated college in 2010, and he next month - but like my family growing up then ours still grow now...

Sepia Scenes - East Hartford Easter

For Mary's Sepia Scenes, the past is always the allure. Memories of past times and days, people, places and things seem to work with this monochrome - they feel like the past.

  • The year is 1968, the day Easter Sunday
  • The person an almost four-year old brother Chris
  • The place our home in East Hartford. The vehicle, a 1964 VW Beetle, with a mere 40 horsepower, old CT license plate and the label for the long gone dealer, the alliterative Ted Trudon in Talcottville
The photo is of a fuzzy and faded color print that has been scanned and rescued with sepia. The smile is genuine, the memories fun...
