Whimsical Windows - Sanctuary Stained Glass

For this week's meme Whimsical Windows/Delirious Doors, I look again to our house of worship, the First Congregational Church of Derby (CT). In an early 20th Century room addition to the original 1842 sanctuary, there are cool stained glass windows that are odd in this style of church as the original Puritans strove to never adorn their plain churches, which may have been the style in the 1700s - but not in 1901. A style with spiritual overtones...

Whimsical Windows - St Margaret Mary

Welcome to the meme Whimsical Windows/Delirious Doors, where we look at portals of interest. I revert a week back to showcase St. Margaret Mary Church in South Windsor Connecticut, opened in 1963. It evokes the past with its many beautiful stained glass windows, these offering a view of Christ bearing the burden of the cross and his Crucifixion - leading to his resurrection on Easter.

We attended a first Communion of a great nephew and loved the look of the church, and with my wheelchair seemingly in mind, great egress into the building - and the lovely seating for disabled users up front in the sanctuary. It was a great day of worship, beauty and celebration...looking forward to your links

Whimsical Windows - Peace always

Stained glass with a simple message. St Philip Church, East Windsor CT
Toby hosts the fun architectural meme Whimsical Windows/Delirious Doors where we look for interesting portals and other details of interest and delight. My entry for this week was taken yesterday at St. Philip Church in East Windsor Connecticut at a family event. This small stained glass window sat in a dark alcove - the message is inscribed, Pax, that being Peace, is always the ideal. Thus, the dark alcove is now awash in the colors that surround a simple hope...

Whimsical Windows - Both Sides Now

Toby hosts the fun architectural meme Whimsical Windows/Delirious Doors where we look for interesting portals and other cool things. For me, today was yesterday. I was chauffeuring the always lovely Patti to meet with our blog friend in the tony Connecticut River town of Essex. We were to have lunch and even before I saw the menu, I chose for my aperitif the stained glass hanging in the tall main window at Oliver’s Taverne. On the non-descript exterior, the colors of the glass did not stand out – however, I thought that the bright gray clouds might make a brilliant backdrop inside.

And I was not disappointed. The colors jumped at me, and made for meme magic. All in all, the conversation was great, the food fine and the colorful window a tasty desert for the post. A meal that was made of more than food – conversation and color were the rewards!

Ruby Tuesday - Colorful Church Glass

Ruby Tuesday 2 and stained glass - are a perfect pairing. We attend a Congregational church in nearby Derby. Built in 1821, the sanctuary structure is the usual Puritan stark* - white, wood, angular and no frills nor style. Just like its 17-19th century dour practitioners. However, the offices and meeting room were built after 1900 have many a stained glass window that were donated by worshipers. These portals look magnificent with sunlight light filtering through the artistic and colorful effects. Lots of ruby for RT2...

* - Unlike the US Episcopalian church which derived from the Anglican/Church of England - those churches tend to be more ornate than the white buildings that dot the New England town squares. Not Westminster ornate perhaps, but not undecorated white wood either...

Whimsical Windows - Stained Glass Puritan

Inside the modern day puritan house of worship. Taken by Patti
Inside the stark white church, a hint of color. Also taken by Patti

Toby hosts the most excellent architectural meme Whimsical Windows/Delirious Doors. Today, I am at our Congregational church in the neighboring town of Derby. The church sanctuary was built in 1821, and the Congregation tradition actually goes back to the Puritans from England - that means that those dour practitioners had a severe austerity in their viewpoints...and in their architecture, the stark white buildings with nary a frill in design which precluded stained glass in those days. Yet, the office addition was built later, perhaps around 1900. And this side has lovely stained glass windows, donated by parishioners at the time. Not austere, but beautiful additions to the colonial style. See more building style at WWDD

Whimsical Windows - Capital portals

Toby hosts the fun Whimsical Windows/Delirious Doors, as we look for openings of style. Last week I was at the Connecticut state capitol building in Hartford, taking as many pictures in this regal structure.

In the first, I like the wavy effect of looking through two old windows at the same time. Wavy best describes the interior window in a hallway door that looks out to stained glass artistry. I especially like the shape of the other window. Interesting effects to say the least!

The second was viewed from inside a room and minus the other pane.

The colors are bold as the stained glass seems so brilliant even though the sun was only hazy, not very strong.

The shape evokes a star or sunburst in the architecture described as Victorian Gothic Revival when construction was completed in 1879. Unique best describes these...see more of the fun at Toby's meme!
