Whimsical Windows - Sunshine State Sunburst

On the way to West Palm Beach on a Delta Tri-Star, Dec. 23, 1980
Toby hosts the fun meme Whimsical Windows/Delirious Doors where we look for portals of interest. Last week I unearthed and scanned 41 prints from a trip to Florida to visit friends in December 1980.

This window view was taken on a Delta Airlines flight somewhere over the Atlantic coast of the Sunshine State. Time has not been kind to this print, so I edited in into black and white - however, the sunburst that peers around the edge of the window is equally bold in monochrome or in color...

SOOC - Sunrise over Carolina

SOOC - Straight out of the Camera prompts me to return to the distant past and a recently scanned photo. The day is 2 January 1981, the time is around sunrise, and I am sitting on the starboard side of flight 674, upon a Delta Airlines 727. It had been a long New Year's Day 1981 and this was the third of four flight legs between West Palm Beach and Hartford beginning at 3:00 AM. Tired as I was, I had to capture this…note the arc of the earth's curvature as the orange sunrise begins its pleasant intrusion into the day. The quality of the print is okay given its age - however the bold colors indicate the start of a fine day...

Shadow Shot Sunday - Surf + Sun + Sand = Shadow

I take a glimpse of the waves on the Atlantic in my walking days...01/01/1981
The Intercoastal Waterway
The subtle reflection in the tidal sands
Shadow Shot Sunday 2 returns on a sunny Spring Saturday today up north, warmth arriving after the conclusion of a snowy and cold winter. However, one can avoid the cold of winter by traveling to the Sunshine State of Florida where a cold day is not all that cold to the snowbirds who visit, as I did in 1980. Recently, I located quite a few film prints, and re-scanned them last week. Granted the primitive Canon 50mm I used back, and given the age and lack of proper storage of said prints, the quality of the scans is so-so. But good enough to rekindle fun memories of a fun trip...

Shadow Shot Sunday - Public works shadows

A bright day for a photo essay in an odd place
A chrome laden piece of equipment
Mayor Cassetti hand the keys to Public Works employees
A beautiful day for shadows
Shadow Shot Sunday 2 is back and the place and subject for today's post is different - at the Ansonia WPCA, and the subject, a newly purchased sewer vacuum truck. Granted, it is expensive at $360,000. However, Ansonia is an old town, 125 years this year, with old infrastucture. This truck can vacuum the old vitrified clay sewer pipes before they fail, which would cost way more in road and construction repairs (the property tax payers appreciate that :). Given the brisk but beautiful day, shadows add the artistic touches to this chrome laden piece of equipment...

Whimsical Windows - Sibling Skyline

Toby hosts the fun architectural meme Whimsical Windows/Delirious Doors, and we scout around to find the many interesting detailing we find, in any era. Here is in the New York City, borough of Manhattan and its always impressive skyline. I believe this to be from a rooftop in 1961. It is my father (the family lived in Bayside Queens 1960-1963), and sister Aunt Terry visiting, and a visit often usually included a tour of the city. I do not know the building (at UPI where my father worked on 42nd Street), but the spread out city below is amazing. Always...
